Who Owns Your Webpage?

Most businesses today have a webpage.
Who owns the URL for your site? If you hired someone to do your web page for you do you own it or do they?  ? If you change designers is that company taking your web address with them? Are you stuck paying retainers to your web designer to do updates or keep your web page
What happens when it is time to renew your site? Some services such as Go Daddy.com will automatically renew your domain if they have your credit card on file or notify you when it is time to renew. If you are relying on your web page designer for this service you may lose your website when you change designers. If you fail to renew your domain and you have done a good job of developing traffic there are lots of computer geeks willing to take the domain and either steal the traffic or sell it back to you at a fee. Either situation is not good. I knew a real estate agent who spent years developing traffic to her site but failed to renew in time. Someone took the name then offered it back to her for $5,000.
Make sure you own your URL and the content of your page not your designer.
